ISRO Sends Crew Module for Gaganyaan's First Uncrewed Mission

ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) has completed the integration of the liquid propulsion system for the Crew Module of Gaganyaan's first uncrewed mission (G1). After finishing this important task, the Crew Module has been sent to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, as announced by ISRO on January 21, 2025.

The Gaganyaan mission is ISRO's first step toward sending humans into space. Before astronauts are sent into space, the space agency will carry out uncrewed missions to test the systems.

The Crew Module Propulsion System (CMPS) plays a key role in controlling the Crew Module. It uses a bi-propellant-based Reaction Control System (RCS), which helps control the module's movement in three directions: Pitch, Yaw, and Roll. These controls will be used after the service module separates during the descent and re-entry phase. The system will help guide the Crew Module until the parachute system is deployed to slow it down.

The system uses 12 100N thrusters (small rocket engines), a high-pressure gas pressurization system, and a propellant feed system, along with fluid control components, to work efficiently. The thrusters are important for moving the spacecraft in space.

Another key system, the Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS), was designed by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). This system was also added to the module at LPSC.

After the Crew Module is sent to the U R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, it will go through the final stages of integration, including adding avionics, electrical wiring, and additional checks, before it is fully ready for the mission.
This successful dispatch marks an important step in ISRO's journey to develop the technology needed for human space travel.
