ISRO Chief Designate Encourages Students to Embrace Value-Based Education

V Narayanan, who was recently appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Space, shared his views on education and personality development with students. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, he emphasized that students should focus not only on studying hard to score well but also on developing their overall personality.

Narayanan, who is currently the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, was in his hometown to offer prayers at a temple. He took the opportunity to thank his well-wishers and relatives for congratulating him on his new role. He replaced Somanath as the Secretary of the Department of Space, whose tenure is set to end by January 13.

Narayanan highlighted that students should first learn how to study effectively. He mentioned that while students come from different backgrounds and have varied interests, what matters is how they approach their studies. Along with academics, he encouraged students to focus on their overall development as individuals.

He explained that students should follow two types of education—'intellectual-based' and 'value-based.' Intellectual-based education involves learning the subjects in school, scoring well in exams, and gaining knowledge. However, value-based education is about understanding how to serve society, help others, and contribute positively to the world. He stressed that both types of education are equally important for students to grow and succeed.

Recalling his childhood, Narayanan mentioned that despite coming from a humble background, his parents supported his aspirations and gave him the freedom to study what he wanted. He also expressed gratitude to his family and children for their unwavering support, as they made many sacrifices to allow him to focus on his work.

Talking about his work at ISRO, Narayanan paid tribute to the scientists who built the foundation of the space agency, including Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan, UR Rao, Kasturi Rangan, Madhavan Nair, K Radha Krishnan, and the current ISRO Chairman, S Somanath. He expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for selecting him to lead such a prestigious organization.

Narayanan mentioned that ISRO’s team works with a strong sense of responsibility toward the country. He emphasized that the organization and the country come above individual interests, and everyone at ISRO is dedicated to working for the welfare of the nation.

He also spoke about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) by 2047. Narayanan appealed to students to study hard and contribute to the country’s progress and development. He urged them to be inspired by this vision and work towards the betterment of society.

Narayanan, who was appointed Secretary of the Department of Space, succeeds Somanath, who will complete his tenure by January 13. Along with his new role, Narayanan also serves as the Chairman of ISRO, the country's space agency.
