The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) started the countdown for its historic 100th mission at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on Tuesday. The launch, scheduled for Wednesday morning, will send a navigation satellite called NVS-02 into space onboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
This launch is special for ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan as it will be his first mission since taking office on January 13. The countdown for the launch began at 2:53 a.m. on Tuesday, 27 hours before the planned lift-off time.
The GSLV rocket, 50.9 meters tall, is in its 17th flight. It uses an advanced cryogenic upper stage developed in India. The mission, named GSLV-F15, follows the successful GSLV-F12 mission conducted in May 2023, which carried the NVS-01 satellite — the first in the second-generation NavIC satellite series.
The NVS-02 satellite is the second in the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) series. NavIC is designed to provide precise information about position, velocity, and time for users across India and regions up to 1,500 kilometers beyond its borders.
This satellite launch is part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s independent navigation system. NavIC consists of five new-generation satellites — NVS-01, NVS-02, NVS-03, NVS-04, and NVS-05. These satellites will improve the existing navigation services and ensure they continue without interruption.
The launch is expected to take place at 6:23 a.m. on Wednesday, marking a significant step forward in India’s space journey as ISRO celebrates its 100th mission milestone.
