Indian-American artist Chandrika Tandon, at 71, recently won her first Grammy Award for her album Triveni in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category. This is a big achievement for Tandon, who received her second Grammy nomination at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. She was excited to accept the award for Triveni along with her collaborators: South African flautist Wouter Kellerman and Japanese cellist Eru Matsumoto.
Who is Chandrika Tandon?
Chandrika Tandon, born in Chennai, India, is a well-known musician and entrepreneur. Her Grammy win marks her second nomination, following her first one in 2009 for her album Soul Call. Over the years, Tandon has released several albums and performed at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center in the United States, as well as at World Culture Festivals in Europe and India.
In addition to her music career, Tandon is a global business leader. She is also the older sister of Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies.
Tandon’s Thoughts on Her First Grammy
After winning the Grammy, Tandon shared her thoughts with reporters backstage. “It feels amazing,” she said. “We had such wonderful nominees in the category. The fact that we won this is an extra special moment for us. Some fabulous musicians were nominated with us.”
Her acceptance speech was heartfelt. “Music is love, music is light, and music is laughter, and let’s all be surrounded by love, light, and laughter. Thank you for the music, and thank you to everyone who makes music,” Tandon expressed with warmth.
About the Album Triveni
The name of her Grammy-winning album, Triveni, holds deep meaning. In India, Triveni refers to the sacred meeting point of three rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. The album is a collaboration of three artists—Tandon, Kellerman, and Matsumoto—who bring together their different cultural backgrounds. Released on August 30, 2024, Triveni features seven tracks that each tell their own story while contributing to the overall theme of healing resonance.
The tracks in Triveni include: Pathway to Light, Chant in A, Journey Within, Aether’s Serenade, Ancient Moon, Open Sky, and Seeking Shakti. According to Tandon’s official website, the album combines ancient Vedic chants with the melodic sounds of flute and cello. The music aims to create a reflective soundscape that encourages mindfulness, self-discovery, and connection.
The album blends Indian classical music, New Age ambiance, and global musical traditions. This fusion appeals to a wide audience while staying true to its cultural roots.
