The Indian Embassy in Nepal has promised to look into the death of a Nepali student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha. They also told Nepali students to return to their classes at the university.
Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student, died in her hostel room on Sunday. This caused many Nepali students at KIIT to protest. Around 1,000 Nepali students study at KIIT. The students were angry and blocked roads. Some tried to enter buildings. One male student was arrested by the police.
A group of Nepali students also protested in front of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. They held signs asking for a full investigation.
The Indian Embassy said that KIIT had asked Nepali students to "return to the campus, resume their classes, and stay in the hostels." They also said that Nepali students are an important part of the relationship between India and Nepal. The embassy said the Indian government would make sure Nepali students are safe in India.
After the protests, there were reports that KIIT had sent some Nepali students out of their hostels and left them at Cuttack railway station without helping them with travel. KIIT later explained that they had tried to calm the situation with talks and counseling for over 10 hours. But some students refused to cooperate and continued to cause trouble, even blocking the main roads.
The police sent two groups of officers to keep peace on the campus. They also sealed Prakriti's room and put her body in a mortuary until her parents arrived.
Prakriti's father, Sunil Lamsal, was upset and said that KIIT treated Nepali students badly. He said, "I lost my daughter. Many Nepali students are studying there. I heard that some students were thrown out of the hostel. This is wrong. This should not happen again."
The Higher Education Minister in Odisha, Suryabanshi Suraj, said the government told KIIT to bring back the Nepali students to Bhubaneswar on special buses. KIIT also promised to make sure the students' studies were not affected by the protests.
KIIT set up a control room at Campus 6 to help the Nepali students who were returning. They also gave out a helpline number for students who needed help.
Nepal's Prime Minister, K P Sharma Oli, said two officials had been sent to help the students. They made arrangements for students to either stay in their hostels or go back to Nepal.
