On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held important talks at Hyderabad House in Delhi. These discussions were a big step toward strengthening the relationship between India and Indonesia. During the meeting, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed. These covered important areas like health cooperation, digital infrastructure, and defense collaboration.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted Indonesia’s role as a key partner in both the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and Indo-Pacific regions. He reassured Indonesia of India’s strong commitment to supporting ASEAN’s unity and centrality, especially under India’s ‘Act East’ policy.
PM Modi also mentioned that 2025 would be celebrated as the "India-ASEAN Year of Tourism." This would promote cultural exchanges and boost tourism between India and Indonesia. He pointed out that Indonesia plays an important role in ensuring peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Both countries agreed that freedom of navigation in the region should be respected according to international law.
Looking back at history, PM Modi recalled that Indonesia was the chief guest at India’s very first Republic Day. As India celebrates 75 years of the Republic, he expressed pride that Indonesia was part of this milestone celebration.
The two leaders also discussed the growing trade between the countries, which crossed $30 billion last year. PM Modi announced that both nations would work closer in areas like Fintech, Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and digital public infrastructure.
Additionally, they spoke about improving cooperation in fields like maritime security, cyber security, counter-terrorism, and de-radicalization. A significant part of the discussions also focused on strengthening partnerships in energy, critical minerals, science, technology, and space.
PM Modi also acknowledged the cultural ties between the two countries. He mentioned shared stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bali Jatra. He also highlighted India’s role in preserving the Prambanan Hindu Temple in Indonesia.
The Prime Minister welcomed Indonesia’s membership in BRICS (a group of five major emerging economies) and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting the interests of Global South countries.
President Prabowo thanked India for its long-standing support, mentioning that the Indonesian Embassy in India is located on land that was donated by the Indian government. He also expressed his honor at being invited as the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations. He reminded everyone that Indonesia’s first chief guest at India’s Republic Day was President Sukarno, so being invited as the chief guest was a special honor. He also mentioned that for the first time, an Indonesian military contingent was participating in a military parade outside of Indonesia.
President Prabowo also praised India’s role in supporting Indonesia’s independence struggle. He thanked India for sending financial and medical help during Indonesia's difficult times. He also expressed gratitude for India’s support of Indonesia’s bid for permanent membership in BRICS.
Both leaders agreed that the ongoing talks would help strengthen cooperation in many areas, including trade, investment, tourism, health, energy, and technology. They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and vowed to continue deepening the strong, long-term partnership between India and Indonesia.
