HMPV Virus Cases: 80-Year-Old Man in Gujarat Tests Positive

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that has recently raised concern, for which an 80-year-old man from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, tested positive. The case was confirmed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Thursday. According to sources, the patient is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, and health officials also clarified that he has no recent travel history abroad. Since January 7, India has confirmed at least six cases of HMPV.

The Union Health Ministry has issued guidelines to all states, asking them to increase surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) and Influenza Like Illness (ILI). This is because of the spread of HMPV, which has been reported in China. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed that HMPV is already present globally, including in India.

In response to this advisory from the Health Ministry, the Himachal Pradesh government has taken suitable measures to ensure preparation of the state. They issued orders to keep a close eye on it. Himachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dhaniram Shandil, assured public that HMPV is the common virus. It mainly prevails in very young children and also in the elderly, and there was no immediate threat to the state from this virus.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that causes illness similar to the common cold. It may cause mild to moderate illness and can affect all ages, though it poses a significant risk to young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of HMPV include coughing, fever, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. Most people recover with minimal treatment; however, for those with other health issues, symptoms may be more severe.

This shall be monitored closely by health authorities, and everyone is advised to get enough information, continue with hygiene, and seek a doctor if one starts feeling worse.
