Mira Murati, who was the Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, has started a new company called Thinking Machines Lab. The company launched on Tuesday and has already brought together a team of 30 experts. Many of these experts worked before at big AI companies like OpenAI, Meta, and Mistral.
The new company wants to make AI that understands human values and can be used in more ways than today’s AI. They believe AI should not just be smart but also follow good rules and be safe for people.
Murati’s new company has attracted many former OpenAI workers. Reports say that almost two-thirds of the team are ex-OpenAI employees. One of them is Barret Zoph, a top AI researcher who left OpenAI on the same day as Murati in September. Now, he is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Thinking Machines Lab.
Another well-known person joining is John Schulman, who helped start OpenAI. He left OpenAI in August to work for another AI company, but now he has joined Thinking Machines Lab as Chief Scientist. He has worked for a long time to make AI safe and make sure it follows ethical rules.
The new company wants to bring researchers and product developers together so they can work closely. They also promised to share their research and AI models with the public. This means they will make their code, datasets, and AI models open for others to learn from.
The company said that today’s AI is good at math and coding, but they want to create AI that can do more. They believe AI should understand many human skills and be helpful in many areas.
Reports say that Thinking Machines Lab is looking for funding from investors to help grow the company.
Murati’s decision to leave OpenAI is part of a trend where many top people are leaving the company. OpenAI has changed a lot in the past few months, and some of its old leaders have started their own AI companies. Some of these new companies, like Anthropic and Safe Superintelligence, have already received billions of dollars in investment.
Before OpenAI, Murati worked at Tesla and Leap Motion, a company that worked on augmented reality. She was an important part of OpenAI’s success and helped create ChatGPT. She was also often seen with OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, talking about the company’s future. Now, she is starting her own journey to shape the future of AI in her own way.
