Elephant kills couple in state-owned farm in Kerala's Kannur

A tribal couple died after a wild elephant attacked them at Aralam Farm in Kannur, Kerala, on Sunday evening. The couple, Velli and his wife Leela, were picking cashew nuts when the elephant suddenly charged at them. They could not escape and were trampled to death.

Aralam Farm is a large piece of land, about 1,500 hectares, owned by the Kerala government. It is managed by Aralam Farming Corporation under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development Department. This land was once a forest, but in the 1970s, it was cleared to grow crops. Later, the government gave half of the land to poor tribal families, while the other half is still used as a farm to help these families.

The shocking death of the couple has once again raised fear about wild elephants attacking people in Kerala. In the past few months, many such cases have been reported. On February 10, a 45-year-old tribal man was killed by a wild elephant in Wayanad’s Noolpuzha area. The next day, a 26-year-old man also died in a similar attack near Attamala, a tourist spot in the same district. On the same day, another woman lost her life in an elephant attack in Idukki district.

These incidents have become more common in Kerala. On January 19, a family of three was riding a motorcycle in Wayanad when a wild elephant suddenly ran towards them. Luckily, they managed to escape. The scary moment was caught on camera by people in a nearby car. A few days earlier, on January 14, a wild elephant attacked a car in Thrissur district, frightening the passengers inside.

In December 2024, a 40-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Ernakulam district while he was walking home. During a temple festival in Kozhikode, two elephants went out of control, killing three people.

As elephant attacks increase, Kerala’s Forest Minister AK Saseendran has called for a meeting with different leaders on Monday. People are demanding quick action from the government to stop these attacks and keep them safe.
