On Tuesday night, two bombs, believed to have been dropped by drones, exploded in the village of Kangchup Phayeng in Imphal West, Manipur. According to the police, there were no casualties from the blasts.
The bombs exploded around 9:27 pm and 9:30 pm, near a temporary security barrack and a police sentry post. The explosions happened about 15 feet away from these areas. It was reported that this was the first drone bombing incident in 2025, and the attack is suspected to be linked to Kuki militants. The last similar attack took place on November 11, 2024.
Forensic experts were sent to the scene to investigate. They found pieces of the bombs and parts of the drones, including propellers attached to a ring. Manipur police commandos, along with the Lamshang police, rushed to the site, but no gunfire was reported after the explosions. The police assured that they were taking the necessary steps to ensure security in the area.
Ajit, a villager from Kangchup, shared that drones hadn’t been seen in the area since November 11 last year. However, in the past few days, drones had been flying around the village, but the villagers didn't panic, thinking they were just surveillance drones. The area where the bombs exploded is close to Kangpokpi district, which has central forces stationed, including battalions from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Ajit also mentioned that the people of Kangchup did not want compensation for injuries or deaths caused by the attacks but instead wanted peace restored with the help of the many central forces deployed in the region.
A police case was filed at the Lamshang police station, and the investigation is still ongoing. In a separate operation, security forces discovered a large arms cache in the areas of Aigejang and Leimaram Uyok Ching in Bishnupur district on Wednesday. This joint operation between state and central forces was based on intelligence reports about armed militants and hidden weapons in the area.
The recovered items included an SLR rifle with a magazine, a 51mm mortar tube launcher, a sniper rifle, three 40mm lathode shells, four SLR live rounds, four 36 HE grenades, a smoke bomb, two wireless sets, cartridges, rubber bullets, and shells. All the items were handed over to Nambol police for further investigation.
