Doctors, staff attacked in Bengal hospital over medical services dispute

Violence broke out at a hospital in Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal, on Thursday after a dispute over medical treatment turned violent. The incident happened at a hospital in Shaktigarh, when a young man was admitted with a leg injury. His family and friends were unhappy with the treatment he received, which led to a heated argument with the hospital staff.

The situation quickly got out of hand, and a group of people started attacking doctors, hospital staff, and even the police officers who were called to help. Several hospital staff members and five police officers were injured in the clashes. The police officers tried to calm down the crowd, but the situation became more aggressive. The attackers assaulted the police, dragged the doctors and staff, and damaged some of the hospital property.

Hospital Superintendent Shakuntala Sarkar shared that the police officers on duty tried to handle the situation, but they were attacked. After the violence, six people were detained by the police for their involvement in the incident.

The police officers who were injured were treated at the hospital. One officer needed to stay for treatment, while the others received first aid and were sent home.

The police responded quickly, with senior officers from Shaktigarh police station arriving to bring the situation under control. By the end of the day, the situation was calmed, and the hospital could go back to normal.

Meanwhile, in a different case, the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has asked the Calcutta High Court for an early hearing about a convict involved in a serious crime. The convict, Sanjay Roy, was found guilty of raping and killing a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in August 2024. The CBI wants to appeal for the death penalty, as the trial court had earlier refused to give Roy that punishment. The court is set to hear the appeal on January 27.

This was a violent and distressing event, with both medical staff and police officers being harmed. The authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and more updates are expected soon.
