The DJI Flip is a new drone aimed at beginners, bringing a fresh twist to what we expect from entry-level models. Similar to the DJI Neo, which closely resembles drones like the HoverAir X1 Pro and the older HoverAir X1, the DJI Flip offers more advanced features, making it stand out in the world of beginner drones.
This drone combines a vlogging camera, selfie features, and high-quality flight modes, making it a great choice for both new pilots and drone enthusiasts. It’s priced attractively at $439 (or £369), which is pretty affordable for a drone with so many features. The DJI Flip has a unique design, especially when it comes to its folding feature and safety measures, which make it a top contender for the best beginner drone.
One of the first things you’ll notice about the DJI Flip is its unusual design. The drone has four propellers that are safely enclosed by lightweight propeller guards, which is perfect for protecting both the drone and the people around it. When folded, the Flip is compact, measuring just 5.35x2.44x6.5 inches (136x62x165 mm), but when it’s unfolded, it becomes much bigger, measuring 9.17x11x3.11 inches (233x280x79 mm). The folding design ensures the Flip stays within the sub-250g weight limit, making it easier to fly without many regulations.
The Flip has a tall airframe, which houses a 3D infrared sensor above the gimbal. This sensor helps with flight safety and navigation. The black panel on the front of the drone also shows the active flight mode, which is helpful when you’re using it without the app. You can select flight modes directly on the drone using a button on its side.
The DJI Flip doesn’t just rely on the app for control; it can also be flown using one of two controllers that come in different kits. For the review, the DJI RC 2 controller was used, which has a built-in 5.5-inch screen that’s bright and easy to use. This variety of control options makes it easier for beginners to find the method that works best for them.
There are multiple intelligent flight modes like Follow, Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, and Helix, which are great for keeping the subject in focus while flying. The DJI Fly app adds even more convenience, allowing users to track subjects, capture video, and even adjust settings using just their phone. With features like ActiveTrack 4.0 and Point of Interest 3.0, the Flip makes sure that the camera keeps following the subject even in complex situations.
For added safety, the Flip includes GPS positioning and a 3D Infrared Sensing System, which helps it avoid obstacles. It also has a Return to Home function, which makes the drone come back automatically if you lose control or the battery runs low. This feature is also handy in low-light conditions, where the drone can safely return home even when visibility is limited.
The DJI Flip is equipped with a camera that can shoot up to 4K video at 60fps, as well as 4K at 100fps in slow motion. It can also capture vertical video at 2.7K or 1080p at 30fps, which is ideal for social media. The camera features a 12MP/48MP 1/1.3-inch sensor, giving decent image quality for a beginner model. You can capture still photos in JPEG or Raw formats, which gives you more flexibility with your images. Video quality is good, but it’s not as sharp or professional as higher-end drones like the DJI Mini 4 Pro.
For those who want to take photos and videos in different lighting conditions, the Flip has two color profiles: Normal and D-Log M. The Normal profile is great for quick edits, while the D-Log M profile offers more flexibility for color grading. This makes it easier for users to get the most out of their footage, whether they’re beginners or more experienced pilots.
The camera is mounted on a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, which helps keep the footage steady, even in windy conditions. However, it can’t switch between landscape and portrait modes like some other DJI drones, which may be a downside for those who want more control over their shots. Despite this, the Flip can still capture vertical video that works well for platforms like Instagram or TikTok.
The DJI Flip flies smoothly overall, and it has a decent speed of up to 27mph in Sport mode. However, it’s not the fastest drone out there, and it struggles a bit in windy conditions. This is likely due to the shape of the propellers and the propeller guards, which can affect its performance in tough weather. Still, it’s a solid drone for beginners who want to practice flying or capture smooth footage.
The drone also includes Hyperlapse features, which let you create time-lapse videos with different modes like Free, Circle, and Waypoint. These videos can be captured in up to 4K horizontally or 2.7K vertically.
One small downside of the DJI Flip is its limited internal storage, with just 2GB available for storing photos and videos. Fortunately, you can use a microSD card to expand storage. The drone comes with a charging hub that supports fast charging and can charge up to four batteries at once. The Flip also allows easy data transfer to your phone using the DJI Fly app, or you can plug it into a computer via USB-C for quicker file transfer.
The DJI Flip comes in different kits, depending on what you need. The base kit includes the drone, one battery, and a controller for $439/£369. There’s also a more expensive option with the DJI RC 2 controller, priced at $639/£549. For those who want extra accessories, the DJI RC 2 Fly More Combo kit costs $779/£659 and includes two additional batteries, a charging hub, and a shoulder bag.
