A major fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, causing widespread panic. The fire started around 4:30 pm in Sector 19 of the Mahakumbh Tent City, which is a large area where devotees stay during the event. It was caused by an explosion of cooking cylinders.
The fire quickly spread, engulfing 18 tents, but luckily there were no immediate reports of any casualties. Kumbh Mela's chief fire officer, Pramod Sharma, said that 15 fire tenders were immediately rushed to the site to put out the fire. The situation was brought under control, and there were no injuries reported.
Ravindra Kumar, the district magistrate of Prayagraj, confirmed that the fire had started in the tent belonging to the Gita Press. He reassured me that everything was under control and no one was hurt.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took swift action upon hearing about the fire. He visited the site of the fire, spoke with officials, and met the firefighting teams. He ensured that the situation was being handled promptly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out to CM Yogi Adityanath to inquire about the fire and its impact.
Uttar Pradesh Minister AK Sharma thanked the police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for their quick response. He mentioned that the fire had been brought under control in about 20 minutes. He also expressed gratitude to Ma Ganga, Triveni, and Lete Hanuman Ji for preventing any loss of life.
The Samajwadi Party expressed its concern about the incident and called on the government to ensure faster relief and rescue operations. Party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chaand also prayed for the safety of the devotees and stressed that it was the government’s responsibility to improve safety measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
The Mahakumbh, which started on January 13, is a significant religious event and will continue until February 26. Millions of devotees from all over India and the world have come to take a holy dip in the sacred Triveni Sangam. In just the first six days, over 7 crore people have participated. The Uttar Pradesh government has estimated that over 45 crore people will attend the Mahakumbh Mela in 2025.
