Coca-Cola has ordered a major recall of its drinks in several European countries after finding that some of its beverages contain high levels of chlorate, a substance that could be harmful to health. The recall affects popular drinks such as Coke, Sprite, and Fuze Tea, which have been sold in Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since November.
The European bottling unit of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium, reported the issue on Monday, saying that the affected drinks were in cans and glass bottles. While the exact number of drinks involved hasn't been confirmed, the company noted that it was a significant amount.
Chlorate is a chemical that can be found in food and drinks because it comes from chlorine disinfectants used in water treatment and food processing. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a warning back in 2015, saying that long-term exposure to chlorate could be a health concern for children, especially those who might have mild or moderate iodine deficiency.
Coca-Cola has already removed most of the affected products from store shelves, and they continue to work on getting the rest off the market. The company said that most of the products still in stores were removed quickly after the issue was discovered during a routine check at its production site in Ghent, Belgium.
Despite the recall, Coca-Cola’s French branch said that independent experts had reviewed the situation and concluded that the chances of a health risk were very low. They also mentioned that they hadn’t received any complaints from customers regarding the drinks. For now, the recall doesn’t apply to products sold in France, but it does affect some batches of Coke and Fuze Tea.
The affected drinks include not just Coke and Fuze Tea, but also other brands like Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico. These products were made in Belgium, and the company said that the production codes on the affected bottles range from 328 GE to 338 GE.
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has apologized for the recall and reassured customers that they are working closely with local authorities in each country to manage the situation.
