Chum Darang on Elvish Yadav's Remark: "Draw the Line Between Humor & Hate

Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner and popular YouTuber Elvish Yadav has recently come under fire for making controversial remarks about actress Chum Darang. His comments, perceived as racist and disrespectful, sparked outrage on social media. In response, Chum Darang, who was a contestant in Bigg Boss 18, decided to break her silence and speak out against the incident.

On Monday, Chum took to Instagram Stories to post a heartfelt note addressing the controversy. She wrote, "Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun.' Mocking someone's achievements is not 'banter.' It's time we draw the line between humor and hate."

She highlighted that the issue went beyond just her ethnicity, stating: "What’s even more disappointing is that this wasn’t just about my ethnicity—my hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected."

Elvish Yadav’s comments were made during a podcast conversation with Bigg Boss 18 runner-up Rajat Dalal. During the discussion, Elvish joked about Chum Darang’s appearance and name, saying: “Karan Veer ko pakka COVID tha kyunki Chum kisko pasand aati hai bhai, itna taste kiska kharab hota hai! Aur Chum ke toh naam mein hi ashleelta hai… Naam Chum aur kaam Gangubai Kathiawadi mein kiya hai.” [“Karan Veer must have had COVID because who would even like Chum? Whose taste is that bad? Even her name sounds so inappropriate—her name is Chum, and she acted in Gangubai Kathiawadi.”]

Chum didn't shy away from expressing solidarity with others who have faced racism. She said, "To my fellow Northeasterners and everyone who has faced racism—I see you, I hear you, and I stand with you. We all deserve respect, dignity, and equality. Let’s raise our voices against racism and promote a culture of empathy, kindness, and understanding."

The remarks didn't just hurt Chum personally but also offended many of her fans and people from Northeast India, who are all too familiar with racist stereotypes and discrimination.

For those who may not know, Chum Darang and actor Karan Veer Mehra formed a strong bond during their time on Bigg Boss 18. Their friendship was widely celebrated by fans, who admired how they always supported each other throughout the season.

Although Karan Veer ultimately won the Bigg Boss 18 trophy, Chum made it to the finalists and left a lasting impression on the audience. Their bond reportedly continued even after the show concluded.

This incident has fueled conversations about drawing a clear line between humor and hurtful remarks. Fans and supporters of Chum Darang continue to stand by her, encouraging respectful interactions and promoting awareness about racism and cultural sensitivity.
