Apple eyes Indian suppliers, in talks with Bharat Forge for components

Apple is reportedly in discussions with Bharat Forge, a part of the Kalyani Group, to include the company as one of its suppliers in India. If the talks are successful, Bharat Forge will manufacture components for Apple, joining the ranks of established partners like Tata Group, Motherson Group, and Aequs.  Apple is keen to collaborate with some of India’s biggest companies and has already begun talks with Bharat Forge, based in Pune, Maharashtra.

Over the past few years, Apple has been making significant efforts to expand its manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem in India. When the company first began producing in India under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in 2020, the local value addition for its products was only around 5-8%. However, this has since grown substantially, with nearly 20% of the value for various models now being added within India. In 2024, Apple assembled the standard iPhone 15 model in the country and further ramped up efforts by beginning the assembly of iPhone 16 Pro models. That year, Apple achieved remarkable results, producing iPhones worth $17.5 billion in India and exporting $12.8 billion worth of products, marking a significant milestone.

Apple currently operates three iPhone assembly plants in India, two of which are in Tamil Nadu and one in Karnataka. One of the Tamil Nadu plants is managed by Foxconn, while the Tata Group oversees the other two facilities. Beyond its operations, Apple has encouraged several of its global suppliers from countries like China, Japan, and Taiwan to establish manufacturing units in India. These suppliers include Sunwoda, which produces battery packs; Foxlink, which manufactures cables; and Aequs, which specializes in enclosures.

In addition, one of Apple’s largest suppliers, Amperex Technology, is preparing to start producing battery cells in India. The company is setting up a plant on a 180-acre site in Manesar, Haryana. Apple’s move to collaborate with Indian companies like Bharat Forge is a clear sign of its commitment to strengthening local production capabilities and building a robust supply chain in the country. If the partnership with Bharat Forge materializes, it will be another step forward in Apple’s efforts to make India a vital hub for its global operations.
