A few days after facing a significant defeat in the Delhi assembly election, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal is preparing for a key meeting on Tuesday. He will sit down with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, state ministers, and AAP MLAs to discuss the party's future strategy and address recent concerns.
This meeting comes amid speculation about growing internal disagreements within AAP's Punjab unit. Despite these rumors, party spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang described the gathering as a "routine strategy session" and downplayed any talk of dissent.
“A political party is always evolving. We regularly gather feedback from different units to plan our future strategies. This meeting is part of that process. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, along with AAP MLAs, will discuss the way forward with Arvind Kejriwal,” Kang said.
According to reports, discussions will likely focus on analyzing the recent Delhi election results, where AAP faced a surprising defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP won 48 of the 70 assembly seats, reducing AAP's count to just 22. This marked the end of AAP's decade-long dominance in Delhi.
The party is also expected to strategize for the upcoming Punjab assembly election scheduled for 2027.
However, recent developments have raised questions about unity within the Punjab wing of AAP. Reports suggest that some MLAs may be unhappy with the leadership and could even be considering their political options.
In the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, AAP secured a historic victory, winning 92 out of 117 seats. But now, concerns are being raised about Delhi's influence over Punjab's governance, with critics questioning whether Kejriwal and the Delhi leadership hold too much sway over state matters.
There are also rumors that Kejriwal may take a more direct role in Punjab politics. Speculations are rife that he might contest the vacant Ludhiana assembly seat, potentially becoming a part of the Punjab government himself.
Opposition leaders have already begun predicting that AAP could face a similar decline in Punjab as it did in Delhi. Kejriwal’s loss in Delhi’s New Delhi constituency to BJP’s Parvesh Verma further fueled such predictions.
Since Punjab is now the only state where AAP remains in power, Tuesday’s meeting carries significant importance for the party's future direction.
