Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi tragically passed away due to gunshot injuries. On Saturday, January 11, 2025, the police shared that it might have been an “accidental fire” from his licensed pistol.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja spoke to the media, saying that, according to the family, Gurpreet accidentally shot himself and suffered a bullet injury to his head. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. His body has been kept at the mortuary in the DMC hospital.
The DCP also mentioned that the exact cause of death would be known once the post-mortem report is received. "The cause of death will be clear once the post-mortem reports come," he added.

The incident happened around midnight, and Gurpreet was declared dead shortly after reaching the hospital. Authorities are continuing their investigations.
Before his tragic death, Gurpreet Gogi had attended a meeting with Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal. The topic of the meeting was the cleaning of ‘Buddha Nullah,’ a drain polluted with effluents. He had also visited the Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir in BRS Nagar, where a theft had recently taken place. He had promised to take action and ensure justice in that case.

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal expressed his sorrow over Gurpreet’s untimely death. In a post on social media, Kejriwal said that Gurpreet had served his people with dedication and compassion. He added that his absence would leave a big gap, and his service to the community would always be remembered. Kejriwal also shared his condolences with Gurpreet’s family, offering prayers for them to find strength during this difficult time.

Gurpreet Gogi joined AAP in 2022 and won the Ludhiana West seat, defeating two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu. His wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, had run for a seat in the municipal corporation elections last month but was unsuccessful.

Before becoming a legislator, Gurpreet had served as a municipal councilor in Ludhiana twice. He also held the position of chairman of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation during the Congress party's rule. Gurpreet was also the president of the Ludhiana District Congress (urban) from 2014 to 2019.

He became known for his unique way of filing his nomination papers for the 2022 Assembly elections when he rode a scooter to the office. He was also known for demolishing the foundation stone of the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project after he became upset with the delays in completing the project.
Gurpreet's sudden death has left the community in shock, and he will be missed by his family, friends, and the people of Ludhiana.
