Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned—this saying is not just true for love but also politics. Swati Maliwal’s recent journey in the political world proves it. Although she did not contest the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, she emerged as one of the biggest winners by turning public attention toward critical civic issues.
Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has had strained relations with the party leadership. Her fallout with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s team made headlines. In May 2024, dramatic events unfolded when Maliwal accused Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal’s assistant, of physical assault. She alleged that during a visit to the CM’s residence, Kumar slapped her multiple times, punched her, and dragged her across the room while her calls for help went unanswered.
The allegations shook the party’s image. Sanjay Singh, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, initially condemned the incident and promised action. However, just three days later, party leader Atishi dismissed Maliwal’s claims during a press conference, leaving Maliwal isolated within AAP. Despite being sidelined, Maliwal did not back down. Instead, she sought justice and made the political battle personal.
As Delhi headed toward elections, Maliwal became a fierce critic of the Kejriwal government. She highlighted pressing civic issues, such as piles of garbage, water-logged streets, and unhygienic living conditions. Maliwal frequently visited areas like Vikaspuri and Burari, documenting the poor state of Delhi’s public spaces. Her videos, shared widely on social media, gained massive attention.
On February 3, Maliwal escalated her protests by taking a symbolic fight to Kejriwal’s doorstep. Accompanied by a group of Purvanchal women, she carried water from the heavily polluted Yamuna River and challenged Kejriwal to take a dip in it. “The Yamuna has turned into a drain with black, dirty water flowing through it,” Maliwal said. “Thousands of Purvanchal women are here to challenge Kejriwal. He should come out, take a dip in this dirty water, and drink it too.” Her bold remarks, captured by ANI, sparked widespread reactions.
In another protest near the CM’s residence, Maliwal symbolically cleaned garbage to draw attention to Delhi’s worsening waste management issues. Her relentless activism earned her praise, and social media exploded with memes portraying her as the real winner amid AAP’s election losses.
Netizens, known for their love of memes, didn’t miss the opportunity. From references like “Ek-ek cup chai” to “Who is the queen?” social media platforms were filled with witty posts celebrating Maliwal’s impact.
Maliwal also criticized AAP’s political tactics after their poor performance in the Haryana Assembly elections. She accused Kejriwal of engaging in “revenge politics” and betraying the opposition alliance. “He falsely accused me of being a BJP agent, and now he is cutting Congress votes,” Maliwal wrote on X.
Despite her disagreements with the party leadership, Maliwal remains determined to fight for her beliefs. When questioned on India Today TV about staying with AAP despite her criticisms, she firmly responded, “Why should I walk away? I have given my blood and sweat to this party for 18 years. I will question whatever is wrong.”
Maliwal’s journey highlights a significant shift in Delhi politics. Her bold stance on civic issues and her fearless criticism of her party contributed to AAP’s electoral downfall. As AAP faces a challenging future, Maliwal’s political graph continues to rise. Whether she stays with the party or takes a different path, one thing is clear: Swati Maliwal is a force to be reckoned with in Indian politics.
