A dramatic political shift is unfolding in South Delhi as early counting trends show the BJP leading strongly in the Delhi Assembly elections. Out of the 15 Assembly segments in the South Delhi region, the BJP is ahead in 11 seats while the AAP holds leads in only four.
These 15 segments include key areas like New Delhi, Greater Kailash, Malviya Nagar, RK Puram, and Kasturba Nagar. Ten of these seats fall under the South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, the AAP had secured a sweeping victory by winning 14 out of these 15 seats. However, the current results reveal a major setback for the party as the BJP makes massive gains in the capital's political landscape.
By 10 a.m., two hours after counting began, the BJP was leading in 44 out of Delhi's 70 Assembly seats, while the AAP trailed with leads in just 25 seats.
One of the most talked-about contests is happening in Kalkaji, where Chief Minister Atishi from AAP is competing against former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress leader Alka Lamba. The BJP has maintained a lead in this crucial constituency.
Greater Kailash, considered a stronghold of AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, is another seat where the BJP has surged ahead. In Malviya Nagar, represented by AAP leader Somnath Bharti, the BJP appears to have gained ground as well.
The New Delhi constituency, where AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal is contesting, has seen a nail-biting see-saw battle. After trailing initially, Mr. Kejriwal regained a narrow lead in the later rounds.
Another significant contest is in Bijwasan, where former AAP minister Kailash Gahlot is running on a BJP ticket. Mr. Gahlot, who switched sides last year, cited dissatisfaction with the Kejriwal government as his reason for leaving the AAP.
This election marks a major comeback for the BJP, which had been reduced to single-digit seats in the Delhi Assembly elections of 2015 and 2020. Gaining over 30 additional seats compared to its previous performance, the party now stands on the verge of a significant victory in the capital.
The surprising shift in voter support has sparked conversations across political circles as the BJP continues to celebrate its growing dominance in the national capital.
