2 Indian Navy Women Officers Cross Point Nemo, Earth's Most Remote Spot

Two female officers from the Indian Navy achieved a remarkable feat on Thursday by crossing Point Nemo, the most remote location on Earth. Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A made history when they passed through Point Nemo aboard the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini at 12:30 am IST during the third leg of their journey from Lyttelton, New Zealand, to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.

Point Nemo is located in the South Pacific and is often referred to as the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility. This means it is one of the farthest places from land, sitting about 2,688 kilometers away from any landmass. It’s considered the most isolated spot on Earth.

The crossing of Point Nemo is an important milestone in the Navika Sagar Parikrama II mission, a special circumnavigation journey by the two officers. This mission is part of India’s naval exploration efforts. The Indian Navy shared this achievement on social media, writing: “#INSVTarini charts through the world’s most isolated waters! Lt Cdr Dilna K & Lt Cdr Roopa A cross Point Nemo - the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility. A testament to resilience, courage & the spirit of adventure.”

While passing through this remote spot, the officers collected water samples, which will be analyzed by the National Institute of Oceanography. The samples will help scientists study ocean conditions, marine life, and the water’s chemical makeup, contributing to valuable oceanographic research.

Navika Sagar Parikrama II continues India’s mission of supporting scientific exploration and research. As the journey progresses, the officers will move toward their next destination, Port Stanley, continuing to meet the mission’s goals.

The two officers began their journey on October 2, 2024, from Goa, India. After completing the second leg of their expedition, they arrived at Lyttelton Port in New Zealand on December 22. They then departed from Lyttelton earlier this month for the longest stretch of their voyage, heading to Port Stanley, which is about 5,600 nautical miles away.

What makes this achievement even more special is that the officers crossed Point Nemo entirely under sail, showing their skill and determination in navigating such a remote and difficult part of the world’s oceans.

Point Nemo is not only for its isolation but also for its use by space agencies. They deliberately direct decommissioned spacecraft, like satellites and space stations, to fall into this area to safely re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere and avoid harm to populated areas.
