On Thursday evening, a tragic incident occurred at the Manakulangara Temple in Kozhikode, Kerala, where two elephants caused chaos during a festival. Three people lost their lives, and more than 30 others were injured in the stampede that followed.
The event happened around 6 pm when the temple was celebrating a festival by bursting firecrackers. The noise from the firecrackers disturbed the two elephants, who were brought to the temple for the celebration. The elephants, frightened by the loud sounds, began to panic and ran wild. They first collided with each other and then smashed into a nearby building. The impact caused the building’s wall to collapse, trapping several people underneath.
As the elephants ran amok, the people in the crowd panicked and tried to flee, causing a stampede. The chaos led to many injuries, and sadly, three people died in the incident. The victims were identified as Ammukutty, Leela, and Rajan.
The injured were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities launched an investigation, and it was found that the temple had received permission to have the two elephants in the parade.
Kerala's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, expressed his sorrow and called the incident a "tragic event." State forest minister AK Saseendran said that if any rules were broken, strict actions would be taken. The authorities are also looking into whether the Kerala Captive Elephants (Management and Maintenance) Rules were violated during the festival.
