The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued show-cause notices to 18 medical colleges across the country for failing to follow the rules laid out in the Anti-Ragging Regulations of 2009. These rules were created to stop ragging and ensure the safety of students on campuses.

According to the UGC, the highest number of colleges served with notices are from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, with three colleges each. Assam, Delhi, Pondicherry, and Tamil Nadu have two colleges each facing notices, while West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh have one college each on the list.

From Delhi, the well-known Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital and Hamdard Institute of Medical Science and Research have received these notices. The full list of colleges is available on the UGC's official website.

The UGC stated in its official notice:

"Your college has failed to comply with the essential requirements set under the Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009. Specifically, it was found that your institution has not obtained the mandatory anti-ragging undertakings from students and their parents or guardians as required."

The Anti-Ragging Regulations of 2009 require every student and their parent or guardian to submit an undertaking at the time of admission and the beginning of each academic year. This undertaking is essential to prevent and discourage ragging in educational institutions. The UGC pointed out that not collecting these forms is a serious violation and puts students' safety and well-being at risk.

In the notice, the UGC also asked the colleges why strict action should not be taken against them for this lapse. The colleges have been instructed to submit a written response explaining the reason for their failure and detailing the steps they plan to take to fix the issue immediately.

This move by the UGC emphasizes its firm stance on curbing ragging and protecting students in educational institutions.
