Two flights with 119 Indian migrants who were sent back from the US will land in Amritsar at Guru Ram Dass International Airport on February 15 and 16. The flights will arrive at 10:05 PM on both days, as told by some officials.
Most of the people being sent back are from Punjab (67), followed by Haryana (33), Gujarat (8), Uttar Pradesh (3), Maharashtra (2), Goa (2), Rajasthan (2), and one each from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The people being sent back include those who entered the US illegally, using Mexico or other ways. Some of them even tore their passports once they got to the US.
These flights are part of the second group of people coming back after the US government took strong action against people who entered the country without permission. Under the previous US president, Donald Trump, many people who entered illegally were sent back to their countries.
There were also complaints that the deported people were chained and treated badly during the flight. Some said their hands and legs were tied the whole way, and only after reaching Amritsar were they set free. This made many people in India angry, and political leaders asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk to the US about how the migrants were treated.
The Congress party's leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, said that the deported people were treated "worse than garbage."
After this, the Indian government raised the issue with the US. At the same time, police in Punjab and Haryana began looking for people who run illegal travel businesses, helping people leave India for the US illegally and charging them a lot of money.
