A 118-member delegation, including Heads of Mission (HoM), their spouses, and diplomats from 77 different countries, arrived at the Maha Kumbh Mela Kshetra in Prayagraj on Saturday. This marks a significant moment as the world’s largest religious gathering continues to attract people from across the globe.
Robert Maxian, the Slovak Ambassador to India, shared his excitement about the event and congratulated the Indian government for organizing it. He said, “I am very excited. I want to congratulate your government for organizing this great spiritual event... India is like my second home.” His enthusiasm reflected the deep connection many foreign diplomats have with India.
Mariano Caucino, the Ambassador of Argentina to India, also expressed his happiness. He mentioned, “I am very happy to take part in this important ceremony and follow the traditions.” This shows how diplomats from around the world appreciate the significance of the Maha Kumbh and the chance to be a part of this sacred experience.
BJP leader Sidharth Nath Singh greeted the foreign diplomats upon their arrival, stating, “Ambassadors, High Commissioners have come to participate in the Maha Kumbh. We have to welcome them. Everyone is excited.” His words show the warm reception the delegates received, highlighting the importance of this global event.
Stella Nkomo, Zimbabwe's Ambassador to India, described attending the Maha Kumbh as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” She added, “Diplomatic life is also about pursuing cultural and public diplomacy. This is a cultural diplomacy where we seek to understand India deeply... We are grateful to the Uttar Pradesh state for hosting us.” Nkomo’s words reflect the cultural significance of the event and the deeper understanding diplomats gain through such experiences.
Christian Villarreal, Bolivia’s Head of Mission in India, shared his perspective, saying, “The Minister of External Affairs can invite us once a year to the main celebrations of India. I had the privilege to be invited to Diwali 1.5 years ago, but nothing compares to this occasion. Not even my sons will be able to visit such an event which happens once in 144 years.” His comment shows the rarity and the special nature of the Maha Kumbh Mela, a once-in-a-lifetime event for many.
On Saturday, more than 5.42 million devotees participated in the sacred ritual, taking a dip in the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. Of these, over 1 million were Kalpavasis (those who stay for the duration of the Kumbh) and about 4.42 million were regular pilgrims. By January 31, the total number of people who had taken a dip in the holy waters since the beginning of the event had already reached over 314.6 million.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the most significant events in Hindu mythology. It is known as the world’s largest public gathering and collective act of faith. This event brings together people from all walks of life, including Ascetics, Saints, Sadhus, Sadhvis, Kalpvasis, and pilgrims. The religious festival is deeply rooted in the belief in purification through bathing in the sacred waters, drawing millions of people from India and around the world.
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 began on January 13 in Prayagraj and will continue until February 26. The event, which takes place once every 144 years, has a deep spiritual significance for Hindus. This gathering is not just a religious event; it is a reflection of India’s rich cultural heritage and the deep connection people have with their faith.
