Zomato's CEO, Deepinder Goyal, recently apologized for charging an extra fee on vegetarian meal deliveries. This issue was raised when a LinkedIn user, Rohit Ranjan, complained about the added cost of vegetarian orders. Rohit, who is the assistant vice president of e-commerce at Route To Market, posted about his frustration with the new fee, calling it unfair.
In his LinkedIn post, Rohit expressed how being a vegetarian in India felt like a curse. He shared that Zomato had introduced an "extra charge" for vegetarian deliveries, which he sarcastically called a "premium subscription plan." Rohit humorously said that being vegetarian had turned from "green and healthy" to "green and pricey" and complained that Zomato was treating vegetarian food as a luxury.
This post quickly caught the attention of Deepinder Goyal, Zomato’s CEO. He responded to Rohit’s post with a direct apology. Goyal admitted that the decision to charge extra was a mistake, calling it "absolutely stupid" and promising to remove the charge immediately. He assured me that the issue would be fixed within the day and promised to make sure such mistakes don’t happen again.
Rohit Ranjan responded to Goyal's apology, thanking him for taking action and saying that he was surprised to see such a quick response from Zomato. He also mentioned how he had worked hard to bring the issue to his attention and appreciated that the senior management was now involved in resolving it.
The conversation sparked several reactions from other LinkedIn users, many of whom were also shocked by the situation. One user joked, "Someone at Zomato got an earful." Another user commented that Zomato was "learning from 'Someone' to tax everything," referring to the new charge.
This whole exchange between Zomato's CEO and Rohit Ranjan shows how quickly social media can bring attention to issues, and how companies can take swift action to address customer complaints.
