Vietnam is aiming to attract up to 23 million international tourists this year, a target that would exceed the number of visitors before the pandemic, according to a statement from the government. The tourism industry is expected to recover fully by 2025, as per BMI Research's forecast.
The country is aiming for a 31% increase in foreign visitors in 2025 compared to 2024, which would mean an additional 5 million tourists compared to 2019, when Vietnam saw 18 million visitors. Visitors from India to Vietnam reached 501,000 in 2024, marking a remarkable 2.6-fold increase in Indian tourists in the last two years. The government has referred to India as one of its fastest-growing tourism markets.
In 2024, the total number of international visitors to Vietnam was 17.5 million, reflecting a 39.5% rise from 2023. About 80% of these visitors came from neighboring Asian countries. The Vietnamese government has set its sights on making tourism one of the major industries to help grow the economy.
Before the pandemic, tourism contributed to around 12% of Vietnam’s GDP, with international tourism accounting for 8%. The government’s long-term goal is to reach 70 million international arrivals by 2045. This could make Vietnam the second-largest tourism destination in Southeast Asia after Thailand, according to analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence.
