A tragic incident occurred in Dwari-Thapla village, located in the Bhilangana area of Uttarakhand, where a couple lost their lives due to suffocation after they went to sleep with a fireplace burning in their room.
The couple, Madan Mohan Semwal, aged 52, and his wife, Yashoda Devi, aged 48, had come to the village to attend a wedding ceremony. On Thursday night, to keep warm in the cold weather, they decided to light a fireplace inside their room. They placed it near their bed and went to sleep with the door closed.
The next morning, their son went to wake them up but received no response. After knocking several times and still not hearing anything, he became worried. He asked some locals for help, and they decided to break open the door. To their shock, they found the couple lifeless on the bed. It was later confirmed by the village administrator, Rinki Devi, that the couple had died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The smoke from the burning fireplace had released the harmful gas, which they unknowingly inhaled while asleep.
Despite the shocking incident, the locals did not contact the police. After speaking with the couple’s son and daughter, the villagers decided to cremate the bodies at a nearby Ghat.
Madan Mohan Semwal worked as a clerk at the Government Inter College in Saraswatisain. This sad event serves as a reminder of the dangers of using indoor fireplaces without proper ventilation
