The US Supreme Court has given the green light for the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, who was convicted for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. India had been requesting his extradition for a long time, as Rana is wanted in connection with the horrific terror attack that took place in Mumbai.
Rana, a Canadian national from Pakistan, had fought against being sent back to India. He had already lost in lower courts, but he took his case to the US Supreme Court in a last-ditch effort to avoid extradition. However, the Court decided to approve his extradition.
This decision came just weeks after Rana had appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the North Circuit in San Francisco, hoping to stop his extradition. He had already faced multiple defeats in lower courts and federal courts.
On December 16, US Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar argued that the Supreme Court should reject Rana’s appeal. Rana’s lawyer, Joshua L. Dratel, responded on December 23, challenging the US government’s recommendation and asking the Court to accept his petition to prevent Rana’s extradition.
So, what exactly are the charges against Rana? He is accused of playing a role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. He has known ties to David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American member of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Headley is considered one of the main masterminds behind the attack, which targeted several key locations in Mumbai.
The attack, which lasted for more than 60 hours, resulted in the deaths of 166 people, including six Americans. The terrorists involved were from Pakistan and launched deadly attacks on vital locations in the city, including hotels and a train station, causing widespread panic and devastation.
Now that the US Supreme Court has cleared the way for his extradition, Rana will be sent back to India to face charges related to his role in the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks.
