The working committee of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has officially accepted Sukhbir Singh Badal's resignation as the party chief. This decision was made during a meeting held on Friday at the party headquarters in Chandigarh. The move follows months of deliberation and comes in response to an edict issued by the Akal Takht, the highest religious authority for Sikhs.
Sukhbir Singh Badal had submitted his resignation on November 16, 2022, but the party’s working committee initially declined to accept it. They had appealed to him to reconsider his decision, even warning that the entire committee would step down if he insisted on resigning. However, the matter remained unresolved for over a year.
On December 2, 2023, the Akal Takht intervened, directing the SAD’s working committee to accept Badal’s resignation. This directive was issued after the Akal Takht had declared him tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) for mistakes attributed to the SAD and its government during their rule in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. Badal had undergone religious punishment as prescribed by the Akal Takht in response to these allegations.
The decision to accept the resignation was finally taken during Friday’s meeting, fulfilling the Akal Takht’s orders. In addition to accepting Badal’s resignation, the Akal Takht had instructed the party to form a panel for appointing new delegates and to organize elections for the post of president and other key positions within six months.
Following the announcement, Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed his gratitude to the party’s workers and leaders. He stated, “In the last five years, I did everything possible to serve the party. I am grateful to the workers and leadership who supported me.”
The Akal Takht had earlier declared Badal tankhaiya on August 30, 2023, for religious misconduct. This decision was made in light of the mistakes attributed to the SAD during its governance in Punjab. The Akal Takht also ordered that the resignation issue be resolved promptly to pave the way for a new leadership.
Amid these developments, a security incident occurred on December 4, 2023, during a religious ceremony connected to Badal’s tankhah (religious punishment). A former militant, Narain Singh Chaura, attempted to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal from close range. The attempt failed as Chaura was overpowered by plainclothes policemen and later taken into custody. This marks a significant turning point for the Shiromani Akali Dal, as it embarks on a process to elect new leadership and redefine its future direction.
