Sikh body calls for Emergency ban in Punjab; security tightened at theatres.

On the release day of Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency, the movie continues to face strong opposition, especially in Punjab. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, urging him to ban the screening of the film in the state.

The SGPC president, Harjinder Singh Dhami, expressed concerns in his letter, stating that the movie could hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. The group believes that Emergency misrepresents historical events related to the 1984 Sikh genocide, the attack on the Golden Temple (Sri Harmandar Sahib), and other Sikh religious sites. A section of the letter, shared on the SGPC’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, said, “By hiding facts related to attacks on the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, Sri Harmandar Sahib, the top temporal seat Akal Takht Sahib, and other gurdwaras, as well as the Sikh genocide of 1984, this movie spreads venom under an anti-Sikh agenda. We again demand a ban on screening this movie in Punjab. If released, we will strongly protest.

Security has been tightened outside cinema halls in Amritsar amid fears of protests. According to reports, some theatres in the city have decided not to screen the film to avoid any disturbances.

A member of the SGPC also voiced frustration with the lack of action against the film. Speaking to ANI, the member said, “Our protest today is about the release of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency. The film has distorted the history of the Sikh religion and the events of 1984. We raised this issue earlier when the teaser was released, but nothing was done. The censor board approved the movie instead of stopping it. Now, we have decided to protest the screening. So far, cinema halls haven’t shown the movie, but we will keep an eye on the situation. If it is screened, our protests will intensify. If any law and order issues arise, the Punjab government will be responsible because they did not respond to our concerns.”

The controversy centers on the portrayal of events from India’s history, including the Emergency period of 1975 imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, her assassination in 1984, and the Khalistan movement led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale during the 1980s. The SGPC has accused the film’s makers of twisting facts and promoting an anti-Sikh agenda.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa has also weighed in on the issue, expressing trust in the state government to handle the situation responsibly.

The movie has been under fire since its teaser was released online. Sikh groups have been protesting, accusing the filmmakers of misrepresenting events and disrespecting the Sikh community’s history. With protests continuing and heightened security around theatres, the release of Emergency remains a contentious issue in Punjab.
