Shreyas Iyer, the star batter, recently opened up about his departure from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and explained that the reason behind it was a "lack of communication." This comes after the rumors that KKR would retain him, especially after his brilliant performance in the 2024 IPL season, where he led the team to their first IPL title in 10 years. However, just like what happened with Eoin Morgan in 2021, KKR decided to release Iyer before the mega auction last November.
Iyer, who was picked up by Punjab Kings for a massive INR 26.75 crore at the auction in Jeddah, expressed his disappointment over the situation. He revealed that after KKR’s title win in 2024, he was sure he would be retained. The team had discussed the retention right after the season. But for several months, there was no further communication from KKR, leaving Iyer confused and uncertain about his future with the team. This lack of effort from KKR in retaining him eventually led to the decision to part ways.
In an interview, Iyer said, "I had a fantastic time at KKR. Winning the championship was special, and the fans were amazing. However, after our conversation post-IPL, there was a long delay with no effort to discuss retention. I was perplexed and didn’t know what was happening. Eventually, due to the lack of communication, we mutually decided to part ways."
Iyer also shared his frustration about how he was left in the dark until the very last week before the retention deadline. He mentioned that being informed so late was disappointing, especially when there had been no communication for months.
"I was disappointed," he added. "When there’s no clear communication and you find out just one week before the retention deadline, it’s clear that something was missing. I had to make my own decision because of that."
Reflecting on his record-breaking auction, Iyer spoke about the excitement of being the most expensive player in IPL history for a brief moment when Punjab Kings bought him for INR 26.75 crore. His bid was later surpassed by Rishabh Pant, who was bought for INR 27 crore by Lucknow Super Giants.
Iyer recalled the moments during the auction: "We were in Hyderabad, watching the auction from our rooms. I expected a good amount, but I never imagined it would get this competitive between two teams. At one point, I had to shut the door and leave the room because I didn’t want to hear what was happening."
In the end, Iyer was thrilled by the interest shown in him but also felt the weight of the decision-making process. His story shows how important communication is in professional sports, and how the lack of it can sometimes lead to unexpected changes in a player's career.
