In the IPL 2024, the Punjab Kings found a star in Shashank Singh, who proved to be a reliable and destructive finisher. Interestingly, it wasn’t the right Shashank Singh initially. The team had mistakenly chosen the wrong one, but in the end, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise for PBKS. Shashank's impressive performance with the bat helped him secure a spot in the team, and he was retained by the franchise for Rs 5.5 crore ahead of the mega auction.
One of the main reasons behind Shashank’s rise was the advice he received from MS Dhoni, one of the best finishers in cricket history. In a recent interview, Shashank shared that Dhoni had told him a key lesson. According to Dhoni, if a player can win three out of every ten matches for their team, they are among the top five or ten best players in the world. This advice gave Shashank a much-needed boost in confidence. He realized that it was unrealistic to win every single game, and instead, he should focus on playing his role well, especially in crucial moments.
Shashank explained how this conversation with Dhoni had helped him see the bigger picture. "Once I had a conversation with Mahi Bhai (MS Dhoni) about this finisher’s role. He told me that if you can win three games out of ten for your team, you’re in the world’s top five or ten players. That gave me confidence. I understood that not every match could be won, and it's important to accept that. I focused on collecting the good points from my performance and avoiding mistakes," Shashank said.
Interestingly, Shashank’s journey to PBKS started with a mix-up at the IPL Auction last year. The team had wanted to pick a different Shashank Singh, but they ended up with the wrong one by mistake. Once the confusion was sorted out, it was clear that the “wrong” Shashank was exactly what Punjab Kings needed. In IPL 2024, he played 14 matches and scored 354 runs at an average of 44.25, becoming one of the most valuable players for the team.
Before his IPL career took off, Shashank had always been a fan of CSK, especially because of MS Dhoni. In an earlier interview, he admitted to having a soft corner for CSK and shared that he would have loved to play for the team if Punjab Kings had not retained him. "I was a die-hard CSK fan when IPL first started," Shashank confessed. "CSK was my first love in the IPL, all because of Mahi Bhai (MS Dhoni). I was heartbroken when CSK lost to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the finals of IPL 2008."
This story of Shashank Singh shows how valuable mentorship and advice can be in shaping a player's career. With Dhoni’s guidance and his hard work, Shashank has become a key player for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2024.
