On January 16, 2025, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his Bandra residence by Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who had illegally entered India. The attack was part of an attempted theft, and the police investigation uncovered a key clue that helped them track him down.
The breakthrough came through a phone payment made by Mohammad Shariful. He had used Google Pay (GPay) to pay for a paratha and a bottle of water at a stall near Century Mill in Worli, Mumbai. This transaction led police to his mobile number, which was traced to Thane. The police then began searching the area, following clues that took them to a dense mangrove cluster near a labor camp in Thane.
Around 100 police officers were involved in the search. Initially, they did not find anything, but when they checked again, the light from a torch revealed someone sleeping on the ground. When an officer approached, the person got up and tried to run. He was quickly caught, and it was discovered that this person was Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad.
The police had tracked Mohammad Shariful to various locations before his arrest. He had been in Bandra until 7 a.m. on the day of the attack, and he later slept at a bus stop in the area. Mohammad Shariful had entered Saif Ali Khan's building, Satguru Sharan, to steal something. He climbed up the building’s stairs, entered the duct area, and used a pipe to reach the 12th floor. He then broke into the actor’s apartment through a bathroom window. Once inside, he was spotted by the actor’s staff, which led to an argument with a nanny. During the argument, Mohammad Shariful demanded ₹1 crore. Saif Ali Khan heard the commotion, arrived at the scene, and confronted the attacker. In a sudden move, Mohammad Shariful stabbed the actor in the back.
After the attack, Saif Ali Khan locked himself in a room, thinking the attacker was trapped. However, Mohammad Shariful managed to escape through the same bathroom window. Later, the police recovered several items from his bag, including a hammer, screwdriver, and nylon rope. These items raised suspicion that he might have been involved in other criminal activities.
Mohammad Shariful was unaware that he had attacked a famous Bollywood actor until he saw news reports and social media posts about the incident. He also revealed to the police that after seeing his image on TV, he became scared and fled to Thane, where he had previously worked in a bar and knew the area well.
The investigation started by looking at CCTV footage from Bandra railway station and tracking Mohammad Shariful to a shop outside Dadar station, where he bought a mobile cover. Although he paid in cash there, the police kept searching, and their persistence eventually led them to the GPay transaction and helped identify the attacker.
