Rohit Sharma's Ranji return falls short, scores 28 in second innings flop

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma faced a disappointing performance in his Ranji Trophy return after nine years. Playing for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir in a Round 6 clash at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC, Mumbai, on Friday, January 24, Rohit failed to make a big impact in both innings.

In the first innings, Rohit was dismissed after scoring just 3 runs. In the second innings, he managed to score 28 runs off 35 balls. During his time at the crease, he hit two boundaries and three sixes and formed a 54-run partnership for the opening wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, his stay ended in the 14th over when he attempted a pull shot off Yudhvir Singh Charak but failed to connect well, resulting in a catch by Abid Mushtaq at short mid-wicket.

Earlier in his second innings, Rohit got a lucky break when he was dropped on 1 run by Umar Nazir, who missed a return catch off a mistimed straight drive in his second over. Rohit took advantage of this opportunity and hit 14 runs in the same over, including a six with a pull shot. He added another six in the following over by lofting Auqib Nabi over long off, but his innings came to an end shortly after.

Rohit Sharma’s struggles in red-ball cricket continue.

The star batter’s recent performances in red-ball cricket have been below par. He struggled to score runs in the Test series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia. In the recently concluded five-match Test series against Australia, Rohit managed to score only 31 runs. Throughout last year, he played 14 Test matches, scoring 619 runs at an average of 24.76.

As per reports, Rohit will not play Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy group-stage match against Meghalaya, which begins on January 30. Instead, he will return to lead the Indian team in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy in 2025.

BCCI announces squads for upcoming tournaments

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the squads for the Champions Trophy and the ODI series against England. Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been recalled to the team after being sidelined for over a year due to an ankle injury. Shubman Gill has been named as the team’s vice-captain, while Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been included in the squad.

Rohit Sharma will be hoping to regain his form in the upcoming series and lead India successfully in the international tournaments ahead.
