RG Kar Case: Sanjay Roy Guilty of Trainee Doctor's Rape-Murder Verdict

Kolkata’s Sealdah court delivered a landmark verdict on Saturday, finding Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was convicted after a swift trial that lasted just 57 days. The crime shocked the entire nation and sparked protests demanding justice and improved safety for women in public places.

The verdict was announced by Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge, in an in-camera trial that began on November 12. Sanjay Roy was charged under Sections 64, 66, and 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While Section 64 governs crimes related to rape, Sections 66 and 103 (1) deal with punishments for death and murder. Section 103 (1) carries a maximum punishment of life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The victim, a 28-year-old postgraduate medical trainee, was found dead on August 9 in a seminar room of the hospital. Her tragic death led to widespread anger and protests, including a strike by junior doctors that disrupted healthcare services across the state for weeks.

During the hearing, Sanjay Roy claimed he was innocent and had been framed. The judge, however, stated that Roy would have the opportunity to present his statement during the sentencing hearing on Monday.

The victim’s parents expressed relief and gratitude for the court’s decision, stating, “The judge has honored our faith in the legal system.” However, they continued to question the thoroughness of the investigation, insisting that one person alone could not have committed the crime.

“We demand a deeper investigation to reveal the full truth,” the victim’s parents said, voicing their belief that others might be involved.

The case triggered a wave of protests, with demonstrators gathering outside the Sealdah court complex on Saturday. Protesters demanded the strictest punishment for Roy, hoping it would serve as a deterrent for similar crimes in the future.

Kolkata Police had heightened security in and around the court premises, setting up barricades to manage the crowd. Lawyers, protesters, and medical professionals stood united, awaiting the verdict. Members of the Junior Doctors’ Front (JDF), along with three other medical associations, including the Medical Service Center and Nurses Unity Forum, organized demonstrations at the court.

“This case is not just about one victim; it’s about ensuring safety for all of us,” a JDF spokesperson stated.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presented key evidence during the trial, including CCTV footage and proof of Roy’s presence near the crime scene. Despite this, the victim’s family and junior doctors’ groups have repeatedly raised concerns about the possibility of a larger conspiracy.

Sanjay Roy, who has been held at Presidency Jail since his arrest, has consistently claimed his innocence, alleging that he has been falsely implicated.

The horrific crime had a significant impact on the healthcare system, as junior doctors across the state went on strike to demand better workplace safety. Their protests highlighted the urgent need for reforms to protect medical professionals, especially women, working in public hospitals.

As the sentencing hearing approaches, the nation waits to see what punishment Sanjay Roy will face. Many hope that this case will set a precedent and lead to stricter measures to ensure the safety of women in all walks of life.
