On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, raised concerns about what he called a "serious problem" with the election system in India. He pointed out that the Election Commission (EC) needs to ensure transparency in the elections, especially after issues that came up during the Maharashtra assembly elections. Gandhi said that the Congress party and other opposition parties have been asking the Election Commission for voter lists from the Maharashtra and Haryana elections, but the EC has refused to provide them.
He called on the Election Commission to be transparent and explain the situation clearly. Gandhi made his statements while addressing Congress leaders at the opening of the new party headquarters.
Gandhi said that there was a huge increase in the number of voters in Maharashtra between the Lok Sabha and assembly elections—almost one crore (10 million) new voters. However, he claimed that the Election Commission has not answered any questions from the opposition or provided the requested voter lists.
"I want to know why the Election Commission is refusing to give us the voter lists from the Maharashtra elections. What harm would it cause if the opposition, including us, had access to these lists?" Gandhi said. He continued by saying that the Election Commission’s role is to ensure transparency in elections and that if there has been a sudden increase of one crore voters, the EC should explain why this happened.
Gandhi acknowledged that the election system was set up by people who are now in power, but he said it’s important to recognize that there is a problem. He emphasized that the Election Commission has a responsibility to come forward and provide the data from the Maharashtra and Haryana elections.
He also stated that during a recent meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), he had mentioned that something was wrong with the way the Election Commission handled the Maharashtra elections. "I said that we are not comfortable with how the elections are being conducted, especially with the large number of new voters suddenly appearing between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections," Gandhi explained.
He mentioned that he had directly challenged the Election Commission to be transparent by providing the voter lists. "I told the Election Commission that they have to make the voter list available to the opposition," he said.
Gandhi pointed out that if the Election Commission had provided the names of voters who voted in the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections and also the names and addresses of voters in the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections, the issue could have been resolved. However since the EC has refused to share this data, the problem remains unresolved.
In addition, Gandhi accused investigative agencies of being used against opposition leaders, questioning whether the institutions in India were still working properly. He claimed that most of the country's institutions have been "captured" by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Gandhi's comments reflect growing concerns about the transparency and fairness of the election process in India, and he continues to call for greater accountability from the Election Commission.
