At the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) held in Bhubaneswar, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar talked about how India's young generation is playing a crucial role in shaping the world. He shared an interesting memory about Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu and how she described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a youth icon. Sindhu said that Modi's attitude changed the country's thinking from "chalta hai" (it’s okay) to "badal sakta hai" (it can change) and finally to "hoga kaise nahi" (how can it not happen). Jaishankar used this story to show how Modi’s leadership has inspired confidence in the youth of India.
Jaishankar stressed that young people are making a big impact in various fields, such as artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EVs), startups, and even sports like cricket and chess. He mentioned that while India is still on its path towards becoming a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) during the "Amrit Kaal" (a phase of rapid growth and progress), the country’s younger generation is already leading the way in many important global changes. Jaishankar said, "Development is complex, but it becomes easier when we believe that nothing is impossible."
The Minister also urged the Indian diaspora to help promote India as a tourist destination. He suggested that Indian-origin people living abroad encourage their young friends to visit India and experience its rich culture and heritage. Jaishankar believes that if young people from the diaspora bring their friends to India, it will inspire them to return and explore more of India in the future.
Jaishankar then talked about a change in tradition for the event's guest of honor. Normally, the guest of honor at this event is someone from politics, but this time, Jaishankar explained that the honor went to someone from the media and business sectors. He said that this change was necessary to recognize the success of young Indians in various fields outside politics. Jaishankar also highlighted Odisha as a place that showcases India’s rich culture and history, noting that its cultural festivals, religious sites, and archaeological landmarks remind people of India’s civilizational heritage.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, running from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar, is an important event that celebrates the contributions of the Indian diaspora. More than 50 countries are represented at the event, which focuses on the theme, "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat." Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the event on January 9, further underlining the growing role of the Indian diaspora in helping shape India’s future and its place in the world.
