On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the 18th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Odisha. During the event, he spoke proudly about India’s remarkable progress in the past ten years. PM Modi highlighted that India has gained respect from countries around the world. He also inaugurated and toured four exhibitions and promotional stalls set up by both the central and state governments.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 ceremony was special as it coincided with several significant cultural celebrations. PM Modi mentioned, “In just a few days, the Mahakumbh will begin in Prayagraj. The festivals of Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu are also around the corner, creating a joyful atmosphere everywhere.” He also reflected on the historical importance of the day, noting that it was on this day in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi returned to India after spending many years abroad.
PM Modi took the opportunity to praise the government’s efforts in improving the country’s economy. He shared that in the past decade, more than 25 crore people had been lifted out of poverty. India has also become the fifth largest economy in the world, and soon, it is expected to rise to third place. He emphasized that India is not just growing economically but is also known for its skilled youth.
“The world is noticing India’s rapid development in skills and economy,” said PM Modi. “Today, the world listens to India. We are not just sharing our views but also representing the voices of the global south.” He further added that India is not only the mother of democracy but that democracy is deeply rooted in the nation’s culture and way of life.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, held from January 8 to January 10, is being organized jointly by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Odisha state government. This year’s theme for the event is ‘Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,’ highlighting the significant role of the Indian diaspora in contributing to the country’s development.
