A serious accident took place at a cement factory in Rajgangpur, Odisha, on Thursday night, when a coal hopper (a large iron structure used for storing coal) collapsed. The incident trapped several workers under tons of debris. According to police reports, 64 workers have been rescued, but three workers—Susant Rout, Dasaratha Patra, and Ranjit Bhol—are still stuck inside. Rescue teams are working hard to bring them out safely.
The accident occurred when the coal hopper, which holds large amounts of coal before it's transferred to the factory's boiler, suddenly gave way. As a result, many workers were caught underneath the falling debris. The rescue operation has been ongoing, and 64 workers have already been saved, but the three missing workers are yet to be found. All of them are local laborers, and their identities have been confirmed.
Jagabandhu Mallick, the Tehsildar of Rajgangpur, reassured the public, saying, “The rescue operation is still ongoing, and we are doing everything we can to rescue the missing workers.” The operation is being supported by six firefighting teams and teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), who are working tirelessly to clear the rubble and save the trapped workers.
After the accident, the factory gates were closed, which led to protests and unrest among the workers and their families who had gathered outside, anxious about their loved ones. The company officials said that they are focusing on the rescue operation and making it their top priority. They also mentioned that an internal investigation has been launched to understand the cause of the mishap. Additionally, they are reviewing safety protocols to ensure such accidents do not happen in the future.
The rescue teams continue their hard work, hoping for the safe return of the three missing workers.
