Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently made strong remarks at the BJP’s Maharashtra state executive meeting in Shirdi, sparking significant political discussions in the state. During his speech, Shah called Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray a “traitor” and firmly ruled out any possibility of reconciliation between the two factions. His statement sent a clear message about the BJP’s stance and priorities in Maharashtra.
Shah’s comments came as the BJP celebrated its overwhelming victory in the recent state assembly elections. He credited the win to the party’s disciplined leadership, the hard work of grassroots workers, and the trust of voters. Shah emphasized that voters rejected leaders associated with “betrayal politics,” further underlining the party’s image of loyalty and commitment to its principles.
The tension between the BJP and Uddhav Thackeray stems from the 2019 political crisis in Maharashtra. Back then, Thackeray broke away from the BJP, his party’s long-standing ally, and joined hands with Congress and the NCP to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. This move deeply upset the BJP, as their alliance with the Shiv Sena was rooted in a shared ideology of Hindutva. Shah’s recent remarks, where he branded Thackeray as a “traitor,” reflect the BJP’s lingering frustration over this split and its determination to distance itself from Thackeray’s faction.
Speculation about a possible reconciliation between the BJP and Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT) had been fueled by recent interactions involving Thackeray, his son Aaditya, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Even Saamana, the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s official mouthpiece, had praised Fadnavis’s development work in Gadchiroli, adding to the rumors. However, Shah’s firm declaration that “doors are not open for traitors” has put an end to these discussions.
For Uddhav Thackeray, this development comes at a challenging time. Since losing power, his faction has struggled to maintain its relevance as the BJP continues to consolidate its position. To regain its traditional voter base, the Shiv Sena (UBT) has taken a stronger Hindutva stance and decided to contest upcoming municipal elections independently. This decision reflects growing dissatisfaction within the Shiv Sena (UBT) about the MVA alliance. According to some party leaders, the votes of Congress and NCP supporters have not adequately transferred to the Shiv Sena (UBT) in past elections, weakening its position. Additionally, ideological differences between the Shiv Sena’s Hindutva-focused approach and the more secular views of Congress and NCP have further strained their alliance. Thackeray hopes that contesting alone will help reconnect with his core supporters, particularly those who were unhappy with his 2019 decision to partner with Congress and NCP. However, whether this strategy will succeed remains uncertain.
In his speech, Shah didn’t limit his criticism to Thackeray. He also targeted NCP chief Sharad Pawar, accusing him of creating political instability in Maharashtra since 1978. Shah claimed that the BJP’s recent victory had “buried the politics of betrayal 20 feet underground.” This remark aimed to position the BJP as a stabilizing force in Maharashtra politics, contrasting it with what Shah described as the opportunistic alliances fostered by leaders like Pawar.
By openly rejecting any possibility of an alliance with Uddhav Thackeray, the BJP is sending a strong message. It is positioning itself as a party that values loyalty and stability over opportunistic politics. This stance is also designed to prevent internal disagreements within the BJP, as some members may have been open to the idea of a reunion with Thackeray. Shah’s remarks serve as a warning to these members, reinforcing the party’s commitment to its principles.
As Maharashtra prepares for local body elections, the BJP and Shiv Sena (UBT) face different challenges. The BJP, emboldened by its recent victories, is focused on expanding its influence across the state. Meanwhile, Uddhav’s faction faces the tough task of rebuilding its base and proving its strength in a political landscape dominated by the BJP. While Uddhav’s focus on Hindutva might resonate with a section of voters, it risks alienating his allies in the MVA. On the other hand, Shah’s bold and direct statements reflect the BJP’s confidence in its ability to dominate Maharashtra’s politics without relying on old allies.
Amit Shah’s fiery remarks in Shirdi have further intensified the political divide in Maharashtra. By firmly shutting the door on any alliance with Uddhav Thackeray, the BJP has drawn a clear line, challenging the Shiv Sena (UBT) to stand on its own. For voters, this sets the stage for a significant choice between contrasting styles of leadership and governance—one that could shape the state’s future in the months ahead.
