At Microsoft's Xbox Developer Direct event, fans were thrilled to hear the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4, the first new main game in the series in 13 years. Along with the new game, the company also revealed a remastered version of Ninja Gaiden II Black, the 2008 classic. This remaster is now available on console, PC, and Game Pass for fans to enjoy immediately.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is the next big step for the series and is co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames. This game is a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 and is scheduled for release this fall. Team Ninja’s Head, Fumihiko Yasuda, acknowledged how much fans have been waiting for a new Ninja Gaiden game. He mentioned, “Fans have long been asking us for a new Ninja Gaiden game. Koei Tecmo’s President, Hisashi Koinuma, and PlatinumGames’ CEO, Atsushi Inaba, led us to explore a collaborative development effort. PlatinumGames had the expertise we felt was ideal for working on Ninja Gaiden."

One of the biggest changes in Ninja Gaiden 4 is the introduction of a new main character named Yakumo. However, fans of the series will still recognize the dark and gritty atmosphere that Ninja Gaiden is known for. The game is set in a chaotic, transformed Tokyo, where the Dark Dragon returns. In this new story, players will face many powerful enemies, including the legendary Master Ninja, Ryu Hayabusa, who plays a key role.

Yuji Nakao, the producer, and director of Ninja Gaiden 4 from PlatinumGames, explained why they chose to add a new protagonist: “Since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, we also wanted long-time fans to enjoy the game, so Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo.”

The trailer shown at the event also introduced some exciting new gameplay features. Yakumo will have new abilities, including the ability to use wires and rails for fast movement, something new to the Ninja Gaiden series. These new mechanics aim to make the game even more thrilling and keep players on their toes. Nakao also shared that the theme of adversity is central to the game, saying, “Adversity is a key concept for this game. From the beginning to the end of each stage, and even in the transitions, everything is designed to represent adversity for Yakumo.”

Along with the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4, Microsoft surprised fans by releasing Ninja Gaiden II Black as a remastered version. This classic game from 2008 has been updated and is available now on console, PC, and Game Pass.

The return of Ninja Gaiden reflects the hard work and collaboration between Team Ninja, PlatinumGames, and Xbox Game Studios. Yasuda also took a moment to thank Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, for supporting the project and helping make it a reality.

With Ninja Gaiden 4 set to release later this year, fans can look forward to a fresh new adventure in the Ninja Gaiden series. Plus, they can revisit the remastered classic Ninja Gaiden II Black to relive the excitement of the past.
