Neil Gaiman, the famous British author known for his books like The Sandman and Coraline, is facing serious accusations of sexual misconduct. A recent article in New York Magazine, titled "There Is No Safe Word," reveals that eight women have come forward to share their troubling experiences with Gaiman. These accounts add to earlier accusations that were first discussed in a 2023 podcast series called Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman. Despite the growing number of accusers, Gaiman has strongly denied all the claims, insisting that the sexual encounters were consensual. However, the fallout from these accusations is already affecting his career in Hollywood.
The allegations against Gaiman include accusations of coercion and boundary violations. One of the women, Scarlett Pavlovich, who was Gaiman's former nanny, described an incident where he allegedly approached her while she was bathing at his home and asked her to sit on his lap. She rejected his request but later claimed that Gaiman pressured her into having sexual encounters, even though she repeatedly protested. She described one disturbing experience where Gaiman allegedly forced her to perform oral sex on him so violently that she vomited. Afterward, he reportedly made her eat it. Pavlovich initially maintained contact with Gaiman, even telling him that their interactions were consensual. However, she later filed a police report accusing him of sexual assault, though the case was closed.
Another woman, Caroline Wallner, shared her story of being coerced into sexual acts by Gaiman while working as a caretaker on his property. She described a situation where Gaiman allegedly crossed boundaries by touching her inappropriately while his child was in bed. Later, Wallner received a financial offer of $5,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in exchange for leaving Gaiman's property. She refused the offer and instead negotiated a $300,000 payment. Gaiman's representatives confirmed the offer, but he denied the allegations, claiming that Wallner had initiated the encounters.
The New York Magazine article also features other women, such as Katherine Kendall and Kendra Stout, who have accused Gaiman of sexual misconduct. Kendall described an incident where Gaiman allegedly climbed on top of her in a hotel room despite her objections. Stout claimed that Gaiman raped her while they were on a trip, even after she repeatedly told him no because of her health condition. While some of the women involved in these allegations admitted to participating in BDSM activities with Gaiman, they stressed that there was a lack of clear, mutual consent before the encounters.
The allegations against Gaiman first gained wide attention in July 2023 when Tortoise Media released a six-part podcast series titled Master, which featured accounts from five women, including Pavlovich and Wallner. Since then, more women have come forward to share their own stories, reinforcing the patterns of behavior described in the original report. In the New York Magazine article, some women explained that Gaiman had an apparent obsession with BDSM practices. While they acknowledged that some of them engaged in BDSM with him, they insisted that consent was not always discussed or agreed upon in advance.
These allegations have already had a significant impact on Gaiman's career. Production on the third season of Good Omens, a Prime Video show based on his novel, was paused after the allegations surfaced. The season was later condensed into a 90-minute series finale. Disney also stopped working on a planned film adaptation of The Graveyard Book, and Netflix canceled the Dead Boy Detectives series. While it is unclear whether these cancellations are directly tied to the allegations, it is clear that the accusations have caused damage to his professional life.
Despite the controversy, some of Gaiman's other projects are still moving forward. The Sandman Season 2 and Anansi Boys are still set to be released. However, the ongoing allegations continue to cast a shadow over his work. Gaiman has defended himself by insisting that all his sexual encounters were consensual. He stated that BDSM practices, when practiced between consenting adults, are lawful. He denied that any non-consensual acts took place during his interactions with the women involved.
The situation is far from resolved, and further investigations are expected. As the debate over consent and power dynamics in the entertainment industry continues, Gaiman's case remains under scrutiny.
