Sunita Williams, one of NASA’s astronauts, recently completed her first spacewalk since arriving at the International Space Station (ISS) more than seven months ago. The spacewalk was a significant moment for Williams, who had been waiting for this opportunity since her arrival. She was joined by NASA astronaut Nick Hague, and together they took on an important maintenance task outside the space station.
Williams, who is of Indian descent and serves as the ISS commander, and Hague worked to carry out long-overdue repairs on the ISS. NASA called this mission crucial for keeping the space station functioning properly and for ensuring its long-term survival.
There are plans for Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore to go out again for another spacewalk the following week, continuing their work to maintain the ISS.
Williams and Wilmore had originally launched into space last June aboard Boeing’s new Starliner capsule. The mission was supposed to last just a week, but they ended up staying much longer due to delays with the Starliner. Problems with the capsule’s design led NASA to order its return without the astronauts on board.
Unfortunately, SpaceX, which was supposed to send replacements for Williams and Wilmore, also faced delays. The launch of their replacement mission was pushed back, which meant that the astronauts had to remain in space until late March or early April. This will mark ten months since their initial launch.
This spacewalk marked NASA’s first spacewalk in months. Last summer, a scheduled spacewalk had to be canceled after water leaked into an astronaut’s suit airlock because of a cooling system problem. NASA quickly fixed the issue, and the spacewalk was back on track. This mission was also special because it was Williams’ eighth spacewalk, which adds to her incredible experience in space. Williams has lived aboard the ISS before, and her knowledge and skills make her an important part of the space mission.
As she floats in space, Williams continues to inspire young people, especially those interested in space and science. Her journey shows how dedication and problem-solving skills can help astronauts overcome challenges and keep working towards their goals in space.
