Sanjay More, a BEST bus driver, was denied bail by the Mumbai Sessions Court on Wednesday. He is accused of running over pedestrians outside the Kurla railway station on December 9. The incident killed eight people and injured over 40.
The detailed order of the court is not available, but the judgment was pronounced by Judge VM Pathade. The judge merely said that More's bail plea was rejected.
Advocate Samadhan Sulane, lawyer for More, argued that the driver had been working since 1989 and could not be blamed for a mechanical fault in the bus. He said More was being made a scapegoat to protect higher officials. Sulane also pointed out that no contractor had been arrested or charged in connection with the crash. He mentioned that More was trained in an office and later told to drive the bus to Kurla, so he should not be held responsible for the accident.
However, the Mumbai Police opposed the bail. Additional Public Prosecutor Prabhakar Tarange argued that More was not drunk during the incident, and there was no mechanical fault with the bus. The police also called More a flight risk, meaning he might try to escape if released on bail.
On December 9, the bus that More was driving accelerated suddenly and ran over people covering an area of around 200 meters. In the crash, over 20 other vehicles were also damaged. The whole accident has been recorded on CCTV cameras.
The case continues to unravel and more legal cases are to be held in coming weeks.
