Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the ambitious plan to train 10 million Indians in AI skills by 2030. This is part of Microsoft's efforts to strengthen India's tech ecosystem and empower individuals with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly advancing digital world.
The plan is linked to the ADVANTA(I)GE India project, which was initiated in 2024. The initial objective was to train two million people in AI by 2025. Microsoft has already surpassed that number and trained 2.4 million people. Among them, 65% are women, and 74% are from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, proving the program's success in reaching diverse and underserved communities. Nadella also pointed out the increasing number of Indian professionals in the global AI landscape, which is reflected in the growing number of LinkedIn users adding AI-related skills to their profiles.
To further support India’s digital growth, Microsoft has committed to investing $3 billion to expand its Azure cloud infrastructure in the country. This significant investment will help meet the increasing demand for cloud services and AI technologies. It also marks Microsoft’s largest expansion in India, reflecting the company’s confidence in the nation’s potential as a hub for innovation.
India’s AI ecosystem is evolving rapidly, with more than 30,500 AI projects currently underway. Nadella noted that India already has one of the largest developer communities on GitHub and is expected to lead globally by 2028. This momentum, combined with Microsoft’s support, is expected to accelerate the adoption and innovation of AI across various sectors.
Microsoft is also fostering innovation through strategic partnerships and initiatives. Its Research Lab has launched an AI Innovation Network to bridge the gap between research and practical business applications. Additionally, the company has partnered with SaaSBoomi, a community of start-ups and entrepreneurs, to boost India’s AI and software-as-a-service (SaaS) sectors. This collaboration aims to influence over 5,000 start-ups and support 10,000 entrepreneurs, driving the economy toward a $1 trillion growth target.
Nadella’s vision underscores the critical role India will play in the global AI landscape. By equipping millions with AI skills and investing heavily in the country’s digital infrastructure, Microsoft is helping to position India as a leader in AI innovation and adoption. This initiative not only promises to benefit individuals and businesses but also strengthens India’s role as a major contributor to the global technology ecosystem.
