Mayawati Urges Govt to Prioritize Public Welfare Amid GDP Drop

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, on Wednesday, urged the central government to focus more on public welfare than getting involved in "narrow politics," especially after the government lowered its GDP growth forecast for the fiscal year 2024-25. This revision of the GDP estimate has become a talking point, with many questioning the government's handling of the economy amidst growing concerns.

Mayawati's remarks were made after the government revised the GDP growth projection to 6.4%, marking the slowest growth in four years. The revision is mainly attributed to poor performance in the manufacturing and services sectors. This 6.4% growth forecast is the lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21 when India’s GDP shrank by 5.8%. While the economy grew by 8.2% in the previous fiscal year (2023-24), the forecast for the current year has raised concerns about the financial stability of the country.

In her statement, Mayawati pointed out how the poor and the hardworking sections of society, despite their struggles, are deeply affected by these economic downturns. She argued that even though the poor may not be directly impacted by the rupee’s fall in the global market, they still bear the brunt of its consequences. She stressed that these people, who are already going through tough times, are unhappy seeing their nation in distress. Mayawati further emphasized that the government must respect their emotions and prioritize the nation’s welfare, rather than indulging in political maneuvering.

On the same day, the Indian rupee depreciated to a record low of 85.83 against the US dollar, which added to the growing economic concerns. In light of this, Mayawati urged the government to set aside “narrow politics” and focus on fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the common people, who are looking forward to a better future.

The GDP growth rate revision comes as India faces economic struggles in several sectors, with the manufacturing and services industries underperforming. Mayawati expressed her disappointment at the government's inability to address these challenges effectively and highlighted the urgent need for action that focuses on the nation’s public welfare.

The falling value of the rupee and the GDP growth slowdown have amplified the concerns of the common people, especially those in the lower income brackets. Mayawati pointed out that while such economic shifts might seem disconnected from the daily lives of the poor, they still have an impact. The government, she insisted, must ensure that its promises of a prosperous future are not lost in political squabbles, but instead translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

Mayawati’s party, which has been focusing on the upliftment of marginalized communities, is critical of the current political climate in India. Her comments serve as a reminder of the need for a more inclusive, people-centric approach in governance. Her call for prioritizing the welfare of the common people rather than getting caught in partisan politics is likely to resonate with many, especially in the current economic climate.

This comes at a time when the BSP is facing challenges in recent electoral results, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where it has struggled to make significant gains. Mayawati's call for the government to set aside political interests in favor of the nation's economic recovery might serve as a way for her party to regain some ground by appealing to voters disillusioned with the current state of affairs.

While her criticisms point to the economic woes facing India, they also serve as a broader critique of how political agendas often overshadow the actual needs of the people. Mayawati is calling for a shift toward policies that genuinely address public welfare, which she believes should be the cornerstone of any government's agenda.
