A major operation took place in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district last night, where 20 Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces. Among them was Jayaram Reddy, a senior Maoist leader, known as Chalapati, who carried a reward of Rs 1 crore. Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the operation, calling it a "major success."

The encounter occurred in a forest along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border, where security forces had been alerted about the presence of Maoists. The operation involved a joint team of personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Chhattisgarh, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), CoBRA (a special commando unit of Chhattisgarh), and the Special Operation Group (SOG) from Odisha. The team acted on intelligence reports about Maoists hiding in the Kularighat reserve forest, located just five kilometers from the Odisha border.

During the operation, a large number of weapons, ammunition, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found, including a self-loading rifle. Following the encounter, a massive search operation has been launched in the area to ensure no Maoists remain active there.

Amit Shah, who is committed to eliminating Maoism from the country by March 2026, congratulated the security forces on this achievement, calling it a significant blow to the Naxal (Maoist) movement. He expressed confidence that Naxalism is nearing its end, thanks to the continued efforts of the security forces.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also praised the security forces for their bravery and success. He emphasized that the BJP government at both the state and central levels was working tirelessly to rid Chhattisgarh of Maoists by 2026. The Chief Minister expressed his respect for the soldiers who risked their lives in the operation.

In 2024, nearly 40 Maoists have been killed in various encounters across Chhattisgarh. Chalapati, the senior Maoist leader killed in this encounter, was a well-known figure in the Maoist movement. He hailed from Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district and was a high-ranking member of the central committee, the Maoist group's top decision-making body. Chalapati was known for leading operations in the dense forests of Abujhmad in Bastar, Chhattisgarh.

However, due to the increasing number of encounters in the Abujhmad area, Chalapati moved closer to the Odisha border, hoping to find a safer place to operate. He was considered a key strategist for the Maoists and had a security detail of 8 to 10 guards. His reward of Rs 1 crore was one of the highest for any Maoist leader.

So far in 2024, more than 200 Maoists have been killed in various encounters in Chhattisgarh. Of the 219 Maoists killed in 2023, 217 were from the Bastar region, which includes districts like Bastar, Dantewada, Kanker, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, and Sukma. Additionally, over 800 Maoists have been arrested, and more than 800 have surrendered, laying down their weapons.

On the other hand, security forces have lost 18 personnel in the fight against Maoists this year, and 65 civilians have been killed due to Maoist violence.
The recent encounter marks another significant victory for the security forces in their ongoing efforts to combat Maoism in the region.
