On Wednesday, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Qinghai province of China, shaking parts of the region. The epicenter of the quake was near the source of the Yellow River, an important waterway for northern China. The earthquake struck at 3:44 p.m. (0844 GMT) in Madoi county, located in the Golog prefecture, at a depth of 14 km (8.7 miles), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
This is the latest in a series of seismic events that have hit the vast Qinghai-Tibetan plateau since Tuesday. On Tuesday, a deadly 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the foothills of the Himalayas in Tibet. A smaller 3.1-magnitude earthquake also occurred in Sichuan.
The Madoi township is home to a mostly Tibet-ethnic population, while many were once nomadic herders who have gradually settled in government-built homes over the years. This region experiences frequent seismic activities due to its positioning on the edges of the seismically active Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.
According to CENC, in the past five years, 102 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher took place within 200 km of Wednesday's quake. The biggest one was a 2021 earthquake of magnitude 7.4.
The epicenter of Wednesday's earthquake is located about 1,000 km northeast of the quake that struck Tibet the day before.
