A 20-year-old woman from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was tragically shot and killed by her father just four days before her wedding. The incident took place on Tuesday evening, in the Gola Ka Mandir area, because the woman, named Tanu Gurjar, had wanted to marry someone of her own choice. Her family had arranged a different marriage, which she did not want.
Tanu had posted a video on social media earlier that day, where she openly opposed her family’s choice for her marriage and expressed her wish to marry a man named Vicky, whom she had been in a relationship with for six years. She also spoke about the daily pressure and violence she faced from her family for not agreeing to the arranged marriage. In the video, she named her father, Mahesh Gurjar, and other relatives as the ones responsible for the threats she received. She even said that if something happened to her, her family should be held accountable.
The video went viral, which led the police to intervene. Police officers, led by Superintendent Dharmveer Singh, arrived at her home to mediate between Tanu and her family. They were trying to resolve the situation when tragedy struck.
Around 9:00 PM that evening, Tanu’s father, Mahesh Gurjar, allegedly shot her at close range with a country-made gun. He was reportedly angry after seeing the video she posted. Tanu’s cousin, Rahul, is believed to have helped by firing additional shots, making sure she died. The police were already present at the scene when the killing occurred. Despite this, Mahesh Gurjar continued to threaten others, including the police and family members who witnessed the murder.
After the shooting, Mahesh was arrested, and the police took possession of the gun used in the crime. However, Rahul managed to escape, and the police are now searching for him.
Before the shooting, Tanu had sought safety at a government-run One-Stop Centre, a place that helps women who are in danger or experiencing violence. She had refused to stay at home and asked to be taken to the centre, but her father insisted on speaking with her in private, hoping to change her mind.
The tragic event occurred just days before Tanu’s wedding, which had been scheduled for January 18. Police are investigating the case further, including reviewing Tanu’s social media accounts. Mahesh Gurjar is now in police custody, and the authorities have launched a search for Rahul, who is still at large.
